Why DEVELOP ØRESTAD AS an innovation district?

Ørestad already has a lot of what characterizes an innovation district. Leading top-tier international companies, small and medium sized enterprises that cluster and connect with cutting-edge research institutions, public organizations and startups. The metro binds the city district together and connects it to the airport and city center of Copenhagen. This geographic location provides a natural global outlook and sets a strong framework for ØICC’s member companies to pursue and attract talent.

Collaborating across sectors will be an important driver for future jobs, sustainable growth, and innovation. But it takes trust and relational infrastructure to build the partnerships that can drive this change. Ørestad holds an enormous potential for doing so by working together to make the city district a hub for knowledge, creativity, and sustainable solutions. Innovation districts are not just a good idea, they are also good business.

What is an innovation district?

"A new complementary urban model is now emerging, giving rise to what we and others are calling “innovation districts.” These districts, by our definition, are geographic areas where leading-edge anchor institutions and companies cluster and connect with start-ups, business incubators and accelerators. They are also physically compact, transit-accessible, and technically-wired and offer mixed-use housing, office, and retail."
Katz, B., & Wagner, J. (2014). The rise of innovation districts: A new geography of innovation in America. Washington: Brookings Institution.

ØICC works as a neutral platform where member organizations come together to meet and innovate. Many projects are born out of ØICC’s five networks where people exchange ideas and challenges that make natural synergies evident. The secretariat then aids the projects come alive through coordinating activities, catalyzing other relevant parties, and applying for funding.

20 years ago, Ørestad did not exist. It was a bare field, with no urban fabrique. Those who chose Ørestad had to imagine what it could be. They were willing to take the risk. And that pioneer spirit has stayed with the city district to this day. They are still pioneers who first and foremost want to make an impact together.
